“Those New Addington Christmases remain with me, inauthentic, unholy and awkward, in the days before we traded up and tried for something a bit fancier”.
For years John Grindrod has attempted to recreate the modernised Cold War Christmas of his childhood in the 1970s and 80s. These were festivities brought to him by Woolworths, from the silver tinsel tree to the flimsy cards.
In this bittersweet recollection of a council estate Christmas long past revisit the highs and lows of a day fuelled by Provident cheques, Babycham and unreachable expectations.
In our second Ambitious Outsiders project with John Grindrod, we remember Christmases past, aided by a selection of carefully chosen and painstakingly recreated 1970’s Woolworths Christmas wrapping papers.
